Gas Furnace - No Heating

If your gas furnace isn’t producing heat, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot common issues before calling for service. Follow these guidelines to identify and potentially resolve the problem.

Troubleshooting Steps

Check the Thermostat Settings

  • Ensure the temperature control is set above the current room temperature.
  • Confirm that the system switch is set to HEAT or AUTO mode.
  • Set the fan switch to ON for continuous airflow or AUTO to run only while heating.
  • Try raising the thermostat to the highest temperature setting to see if the furnace turns on.

Inspect the Airflow

  • If airflow from your vents seems weak, check the air filter. A dirty or clogged filter can block airflow and reduce heating efficiency.
  • Make sure all air registers and vents are open and not obstructed by furniture, rugs, or other objects.

Check the Power Supply

  • Locate the power disconnect switch near the furnace and ensure it is turned on.
  • Inspect the circuit breaker or fuse box for a tripped breaker or blown fuse that may have shut off power to the furnace.

Verify the Gas Supply

  • Make sure the gas control valve is in the ON position and supplying gas to the furnace.
  • If you suspect a gas leak, turn off the gas immediately and call a professional.

Check the Pilot Light or Ignition System

  • If your furnace has a pilot light, check if it is lit. If it has gone out, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for relighting it.
  • If your furnace has an electronic ignition system, ensure the ignition is functioning properly. If it fails to light, the system may need servicing.

Look for Error Codes or Warning Lights

  • Many modern furnaces have a diagnostic LED light that flashes an error code when there is a problem. Check the furnace manual for troubleshooting based on the error code displayed.
